UK-China Medical Exchanges and Cooperation with Hospitals

An important part of our work is the exchange of doctors and nurses between the United Kingdom and China. The hospitals in London, especially Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital Paddington and Barts and The London Hopsital have been most cooperative in receiving medical visitors from China, and in sending their best HIV experts to hospitals in China, and for workshops around China. We have had similar cooperation in each direction with the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh.
Visits from UK hospitals to China
Barry & Martin’s Trust has organized and sponsored teams from UK hospitals to conduct HIV/AIDS workshops in Beijing; Anshun, Guizhou; Ruili, Yunnan; Liuzhou, Guangxi; Guangzhou and Shenzhen, Guangdong;, Urumqi, Xinjiang; Chengdu, Sichuan; Jinan, Shandong; Shanghai; Nanjing, Jiangsu; and Nanchang, Jiangxi.
We brought Dr Martyn Hourihan, Dr Rebecca O’Connell and Health Adviser Rosemary Handyside to Chengdu from Barts & The London Hospital. They lectured and did ward rounds at Chengdu Contagious Diseases Hospital. Martyn, Rebecca and Rosemary are visiting patients, together with Eugene and Frankie. Rebecca spoke with enthusiasm about the role of the HIV doctor, because HIV connects with many different branches of medicine. In China, doctors are reluctant to work in HIV, because the pay is lower and they fear occupational infection.

The hospitals in China with which the Trust works most consistently are the Beijing You’an and Beijing Ditan Hospitals; the Xinjiang Infectious Diseases Hospital in Urumqi and the Yining City Hospital in Yili Prefecture, Xinjiang; the No. 2 People’s Hospital in Dali, Yunnan; the Chengdu Contagious Diseases Hospital; and others in Nanchang, Jiangxi; Tianjin; Nanning, Guangxi; Jinzhou, Liaoning; Changchun, Jilin; Harbin, Heilongjiang; Guiyang, Guizhou; Zhongnan Hospital Wuhan University, etc.
